Notice: Alpha Delta Phi Foundation Seward Scholarship applications for 2023 are open until July 16, 2023. Read the rules and apply.
The Alpha Delta Phi Foundation’s Seward Scholarships are awarded on behalf of Clarence A. Seward, who throughout his studies and notable career made multiple donations to help undergraduates reach their academic goals. His understanding of the literary tradition as a treasure worth sharing is the fundamental goal of this scholarship. So, from our funds, we award competitive-based grants to those individuals who demonstrate not just scholarly achievement but also leadership and significant contributions to the community at their college or university.
Seward, a lawyer, was noted as much for his expertise in patent law and the law of common carriers as he was for his skill in elocution and composition. He loved literature (in multiple languages) and quoted his favorite texts, spotting conversations with references, metaphors, and analogies.
We also believe in the power of the written word, that both prose and poetry, offer as wide a point of view as history, Latin, mathematics, or science in the pursuit of a rich education. In accordance with this approach to scholarly achievement, we also offer grants to those students who demonstrate excellence in the various literary functions including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and even photography (the absence of words, equally as compelling), and to the student whose work, overall, stands out above the rest.
